Developing your intuition

I get so many requests from people who are curious about their own intuitive sense but don't know how to measure or develop it that I wanted to put a few helpful hints together here.

First, if you think you are highly sensitive, my advice would be to get it measured. There is a glorious web site out there called gotpsi.com. This site is completely devoted to gathering scientific data to either prove or disprove if psychic sense really does exist. It is set up in a series of tests, which are really games for you to play, and at the end of each series of trials you can see not only what your odds were against chance, but how you rank among everyone else out there who logged on and played that game that day. I highly recommend this site for both measuring and developing your intuition.

Now, if you want to continue to develop your sixth sense, I recommend that you practice, practice, practice! Okay, Victoria….how the heck can we do that when we don't know how? Well, below are some things that I did when I was first working on my ability. Perhaps these techniques will help you too.

1) This exercise involves the newspaper, so if you don't have a subscription, you might want to make sure purchasing one is on your daily list of to-dos. When you have a quiet moment sit down with a blank piece of paper and close your eyes. Concentrate on one question and one question only, which is "What will be in the headline for tomorrow's newspaper?" (Hint, I would suggest you narrow that question down as specifically as possible, i.e. "What will be the headline for Monday, February 20th' in the Boston Globe newspaper?")

When you begin to feel you've got something open your eyes and begin to jot down all thoughts related to that headline. Make sure to touch on the action, issue, and result of the article in question. If there was more than one headline that occurred to you, jot that down as well.

Track your results: I would definitely keep a journal, because sometimes you can touch on something that is further out than just the next day. See how close you come to hitting on the headline.

2) This exercise needs the assistance of a friend. First, give a good friend some cash to go out and purchase several magazines that have vivid imagery. I would recommend a travel magazine and National Geographic. (It is VERY important that you have no contact with the magazines beforehand - this will pollute the exercise.)

Next, have them cut out the most vividly colorful pictures they can find and place these individually inside a manila envelope that you cannot see through. Once the envelopes are sealed, have them deliver them to you and when you can find a quiet moment gather some blank pieces of paper together and jot down the following headers spaced neatly down the left side of the page, leaving some room at the bottom to draw a sketch:

          • Colors
          • Sounds
          • Smells
          • Textures
          • Tastes
          • Feelings

Finally, at the bottom of the page, leave yourself some room to draw a rough, abstract sketch. After you've labeled each sheet, take an envelope and focus on what colors, sounds, textures, tastes and feelings are associated with the image inside. After a moment or two, open your eyes and jot these down under each header. After you've done that, draw a rough sketch of the shapes associated with that image. Finally, open your envelope and see how you've done!

3) I also recommend keeping a small notebook with you at all times. When you get a random thought or idea, seemingly out of the blue about something or someone, jot it down. I used to do this with movies, like I'd be driving and I'd get the image of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. Sure enough, within a few days I'd see a commercial or the movie itself would play on the tellie.

Although I haven't run across a lot of books that have helped me out, there is one author that I adore, and highly recommend. Laura Day has written a series of intuitive development books, and offers easy exercises and terrific advise. My favorite is Practical Intuition.
